An overview of major career, fellowship, and internship developments across Indian public institutions, covering ISRO Scientist/Engineer recruitment, the DBT BioCARe programme for women researchers, and key policy revisions in the PM Inter…
Overview of Technical, Research, and Skilling Pathways
Recent announcements across Indian central institutions and government departments have introduced several structured employment, research fellowship, and professional skilling opportunities for graduates and early-to-mid-career professionals [1][3][5]. These initiatives span technical roles in aerospace engineering, specialized research funding for women scientists, and expanded industrial internship pathways under revamped national guidelines [1][3][5].
For job seekers, researchers, and students, staying updated on official qualification benchmarks, application windows, and compensation frameworks is critical to navigating public sector selections and competitive fellowships [1][5].
ISRO Scientist and Engineer ‘SC’ Recruitment Drive
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has initiated a nationwide recruitment drive for Scientist and Engineer ‘SC’ positions across multiple disciplines, covering vacancies at various ISRO Centres and the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) [1]. The recruitment drive comprises a total of 176 vacancies distributed across Electronics, Mechanical, and Computer Science engineering streams [1].
The post breakdown includes 100 vacancies in Electronics (99 in ISRO Centres and 1 in PRL), 53 vacancies in Mechanical Engineering (52 in ISRO Centres and 1 in PRL), and 22 vacancies in Computer Science (21 in ISRO Centres and 1 in PRL) [1]. Classified as Group ‘A’ positions, these roles carry Level 10 remuneration in the Pay Matrix, representing significant career openings within the national space research infrastructure [1].
Applicants must hold a BE, BTech, or equivalent qualification in the relevant engineering branch from a recognised institution, with Electronics applicants requiring a background in Electronics and Communication Engineering [1]. Candidates are required to have secured at least 65% aggregate marks or a CGPA of 6.84 on a 10-point scale in their qualifying degree [1]. The upper age limit is set at 28 years as of September 16, 2026, with age relaxations applicable for eligible categories such as Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), Central Government employees, and ex-servicemen [1]. Applications must be submitted online through the official recruitment portal by 11:55 pm on September 16, 2026 [1].
DBT BioCARe Programme 2026–27 for Women Researchers
To promote career advancement and facilitate re-entry into scientific research, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, has invited applications for the Biotechnology Career Advancement and Re-orientation (BioCARe) Programme for Women Researchers 2026–27 [5]. The scheme was notified on August 25, 2026, and is specifically designed for unemployed Indian women researchers residing in India who are seeking to establish or restart their scientific research careers [5].
The programme is aimed at researchers for whom the proposed project represents their first extramural research grant as a Principal Investigator from a government or government-supported funding agency [5]. The upper age limit for applicants is 55 years, and candidates registered in higher studies or already receiving other fellowships are not eligible [5].
Proposals under BioCARe are categorised into two funding tracks [5]:
- Category I: Open to researchers with a PhD in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or allied/interdisciplinary sciences, or professional degrees such as MD, MDS, or M.V.Sc [5]. Projects under this category receive research grants of up to Rs 60 lakh, which includes a consolidated monthly fellowship of Rs 75,000 [5].
- Category II: Open to candidates with an M.Tech in Biotechnology or allied fields, an M.Pharma, or an equivalent degree [5]. These projects receive grants of up to Rs 40 lakh, including a consolidated monthly fellowship of Rs 58,000 [5].
Approved projects run for a duration of up to three years [5]. The research scope encompasses diverse areas including Animal and Marine Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Biomaterials, Medical Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Bioenergy, as well as Plant and Agriculture Biotechnology [5]. Applicants must identify a host institution and a mentor, and submit their applications online through the Common Fellowship Portal before the deadline on September 23, 2026 [5].
Revisions and Expanding Uptake in the PM Internship Scheme
India's PM Internship Scheme has registered a noticeable increase in participation during its third round, reaching 17,637 candidate joinings as of early August [3]. This marks an increase compared to the 10,195 joinings reported to Parliament in July, as well as the figures recorded during Round 1 (8,760 joinings from over 1.27 lakh opportunities) and Round 2 (7,308 joinings from over 1.18 lakh opportunities) [3]. In total, Round 3 recorded 1,77,567 internship opportunities, 3,50,259 applications, 1,41,286 individual applicants, and 32,330 offers made [3].
The higher uptake follows several structural adjustments implemented by the government to tackle earlier participation and retention challenges [3]:
- Expanded Eligibility: The age bracket was widened from the previous 21–24 years to 18–25 years, while final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students were granted eligibility [3].
- Higher Financial Support: The monthly stipend was raised from ₹5,000 to ₹9,000 [3].
- Flexible Duration: The internship tenure was shortened from a fixed 12-month period to between six and nine months [3].
- Broader Employer Pool: Participating host entities were expanded beyond traditional large corporations to include Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) [3].
- Ongoing Application Model: The Ministry of Corporate Affairs shifted Round 3 towards continuous, ongoing posting of internship openings by participating enterprises [3].
These modifications directly target previous hurdles identified by applicants, including location preferences, long commitment periods, and mismatched role allocations, providing candidates with practical industry exposure to enhance workplace readiness [3].
