Education Ministry Extends NMMSS Scholarship Deadline to Nov 15

What happened

The Ministry of Education has officially extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27 to November 15 ^[4][15]. Eligible students can submit their forms on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) ^[15]. Before applying, students must complete their One-Time Registration on the portal ^[4][16].

As of October 30, the portal recorded a total of 2,90,014 submitted applications, consisting of 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewals ^[15][16]. Alongside the deadline extension, the ministry released a revised verification schedule: Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification must be completed by November 30, and District Nodal Officer (L2) verification by December 15 ^[15][16].

Why it matters

Designed for meritorious students from economically weaker sections, the NMMSS aims to reduce school dropouts after Class 8 and encourage continuation of education up to Class XII ^[4][15]. The scheme awards one lakh fresh scholarships annually to eligible Class 9 students who pass a selection test conducted by state or union territory governments ^[4][15]. Eligible participants studying in state government, government-aided, and local body schools receive an annual financial support of Rs 12,000, disbursed directly to bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer ^[4][15][16]. Applicants must have secured at least 55 percent marks or equivalent grade in Class 7—with a five-percentage-point relaxation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students—and have a parental annual income not exceeding Rs 3.50 lakh ^[15][16].

What to watch

Students intending to apply should finish their One-Time Registration and submit their forms on the National Scholarship Portal ahead of the November 15 cutoff ^[4][15][16]. Applicants who have already submitted their paperwork should track their status to ensure institutional and district verifications clear by the respective November 30 and December 15 deadlines ^[4][15][16].
