Ministry of Education Sets October 31 Deadline for NMMSS 2026-27 Scholarship Registration

What happened

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) under the Union Ministry of Education organized a regional Orientation-cum-Review Workshop on the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh ^[3][7]. Led by DoSEL Economic Adviser Ms. A. Srija, the workshop brought together state officials, district nodal officers, and institute nodal officers to review implementation progress and streamline operations on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for the 2026-27 academic year ^[3][7].

During the workshop, officials emphasized strict adherence to operational deadlines. The Ministry announced that the last date for fresh student registration for the 2026-27 academic year is October 31, 2026 ^[3][8]. Following registration, Institute Nodal Officers (INOs) and District Nodal Officers (DNOs) must complete application verifications by November 15, 2026, and November 30, 2026, respectively ^[3][8].

Why it matters

The NMMSS is a central sector scheme designed to financially support meritorious students from economically weaker sections, helping reduce dropout rates after Class VIII and encouraging students to continue their education through Class XII ^[7][8]. Eligible students under this initiative receive an annual scholarship amount of ₹12,000 ^[3][7]. By conducting regional workshops and establishing strict verification timelines, the Ministry aims to achieve 100% scholarship saturation, eliminate dropouts among eligible beneficiaries, and resolve technical challenges faced by states and union territories ^[7][8].

What to watch

Eligible students and guardians should monitor the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) closely to ensure their applications are submitted before the October 31, 2026 deadline ^[3][7]. Stakeholders must also track the subsequent verification windows concluding on November 15 for INOs and November 30 for DNOs to guarantee successful scholarship disbursement ^[3][8].
