MoSPI reported Q1 FY 2026-27 real GDP growth of 7.8%, driven by robust domestic demand, services, and investment.
Introduction to Q1 FY 2026-27 GDP Estimates
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released its official quarterly estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first quarter (April–June) of the financial year 2026-27 [1]. The release details expenditure components and growth figures evaluated at both constant (2022-23) and current prices [1]. India entered the 2026-27 fiscal year navigating persistent geopolitical tensions and global trade uncertainty [2]. Despite external economic pressures, the data indicates a strong start to the financial year, supported by buoyant domestic demand and gains across manufacturing and services [2]. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) described India as one of the world's fastest-growing economies and a key engine of global growth in July 2026 [2]. Additionally, S&P Global Ratings affirmed India's 'BBB/A-2' sovereign ratings with a Stable Outlook in August 2026, following the long-term rating upgrade to 'BBB' in 2025 after an 18-year gap [2].
Real GDP and Gross Value Added Growth
For the first quarter of FY 2026-27, real GDP—defined as GDP at constant prices—is estimated at ₹81.36 lakh crore [2]. This represents a year-on-year growth rate of 7.8%, accelerating from the 6.9% recorded in the corresponding quarter of FY 2025-26 [2]. This performance exceeded the Reserve Bank of India's projection of 7.0% for the quarter [2]. Furthermore, the outcome marks the highest Q1 real GDP growth rate across the four-year evaluation span from 2023-24 to 2026-27 [2].
Nominal GDP, or GDP at current prices, reached ₹88.27 lakh crore during the same three-month period, registering a growth rate of 10.3% compared to 8.1% in Q1 of the previous financial year [1][2]. In terms of production, Real Gross Value Added (GVA) expanded by 8.2% to reach ₹73.82 lakh crore (compared to 7.0% last year), while Nominal GVA grew by 11.5% to ₹80.53 lakh crore (compared to 8.1% last year) [2]. Real and Nominal GVA overall were assessed to grow by 8.2% and 11.5% respectively in Q1 of FY 2026-27 [1].
Sectoral Performance Across Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Sectors
The broader economic expansion was underpinned by robust contributions across major industrial sectors [1][2]. The tertiary or services sector served as a primary driver, registering a growth rate of 10.0% at constant prices, mainly driven by the 'Financial, Real Estate, IT, and Professional Services' category, which expanded by 12.1% during Q1 of FY 2026-27 [1].
The secondary sector also delivered solid growth, expanding by 8.6% at constant prices [1]. Meanwhile, the primary sector observed a constant-price growth rate of 2.9%, mainly contributed by the performance of the 'Agriculture and Allied' sector, which posted a 3.6% growth rate for the quarter [1]. Additional economic momentum continued into July, with industrial production rising 6.7%, cumulative merchandise and services exports growing 13.16% year-on-year, and credit to industry and services expanding by 20.0% and 22.9% respectively [2].
Expenditure-Side Drivers and Investment Trends
On the expenditure side, economic momentum was led by significant expansion in capital formation, household consumption, and exports [1][2]. Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) recorded a double-digit constant-price growth rate of 11.9% in Q1 FY 2026-27, marking a considerable acceleration from the 5.8% growth observed in Q1 FY 2025-26 [1][2]. Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) increased by 7.1% at constant prices during the quarter [1][2]. Furthermore, exports grew by 12.0% during the period [2].
Revisions to Historical National Accounts Data
Alongside the Q1 performance metrics, MoSPI published updated annual revised estimates for the financial years 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25 within its National Accounts Statistics publication [1][2]. These revisions incorporate the new series of the Output Producer Price Index (PPI) and the Banking Services Price Index (BkSPI), both utilizing a 2022-23 base year, alongside updated administrative datasets [1][2]. Consequently, revised real GDP growth figures stand at 7.3% for 2023-24 (up from 7.2%), 7.2% for 2024-25 (up from 7.1%), and 7.8% for 2025-26 (up from 7.7%) [2]. The National Accounts Statistics also adopted the Double Deflation approach for estimating manufacturing GVA, where output and intermediate consumption are separately deflated using granular Producer Price Indices to derive real GVA [1].
